Outdoor Spaces Can be Functional and Beautiful

Do you picture yourself sitting on your front porch, watching the sunrise with a cup of coffee in hand? Or enjoying a cool evening breeze as you watch the sunset from your patio? Perhaps you love watching a storm from the safety of your home. Outdoor spaces can add value and beauty to your home.

A deck, patio or porch are all great ways to enjoy your surroundings, relax after work or bring the family together. In addition, an outdoor space can also be an investment. One of the top returns on a remodeling or new construction project for homeowners is a deck or patio. Roeser Home Remodeling can work with you to create a functional and beautiful outdoor living space that fits your budget.

What is an Outdoor Space?

Outdoor spaces can be broken down into types – detached from or attached to the home; elevated or at ground level; enclosed or open. Any one of these can expand your living space and your enjoyment of your home.

When you’re thinking about expanding your home into the outdoors, there are some things you need to consider.

Examples of Outdoor Spaces

Before drawing up any design, first decide how you plan to use your new outdoor space. Here are some ideas.

step-down wood deck

Create an outdoor living space with a wood deck.

Do you envision entertaining a large crowd, cooking on your outdoor kitchen and dancing under the stars? Or do you prefer more intimate affairs with cozy seating around a fire pit as you and your guests talk deep into the night? Even large gatherings need quiet spaces, so a step-down from the main deck is a great option for both.

If you’ll be spending lots of time on your deck, consider the ages of your family members. Older members would benefit from wider steps with handrails. Having a deck with enclosed rails will keep babies and toddlers safe.

Decks are attached to the home and usually elevated several feet or more. They are made from a number of materials so you’ll be sure to find something that fits your budget. These include treated lumber, composite lumber, composite material, and aluminum. Aesthetically, any of these would work, depending on what you envision for your outdoor living space.

room additions - Roeser Home Remodel St. Louis

A patio can extend your pool deck.

Patios differ from decks in several ways. They are built at ground level and can be attached or detached from the house. Patios can be made with pavers, poured or stamped concrete, salvaged bricks or tile.

Like a deck, a patio can be set up in distinct zones to get more out of your outdoor living space. If you have an in-ground pool, a patio can be an extension of its deck, making a better (and drier) transition from water to home. Adding a fire pit or outdoor fireplace will allow you to use your outdoor space long into the cooler seasons.

You could even add a patio away from your home, using it as a foundation for a fire pit with seating.

Enjoy the sunrise on your porch

Watching the sunrise from your porch is one of life’s small pleasures. But more importantly, a front porch can give your home great curb appeal. A new or remodeled front porch from Roeser Home Remodeling can change the look of your home and add to your investment.

Porches can have any number of designs. It can wrap around two sides of the home with multiple doors leading to interior rooms. Or it can run the length of the front of the house.

Whatever the design or length, your porch signifies a transition from the outer world of public spaces to the home within the house. Make that transitional space uniquely yours with charming touches such as wicker furniture or porch swing, potted plants and a welcome mat or flag.

Enclosed porches/Sun rooms

screened in porch

A screened-in porch lets you enjoy outdoor spaces in comfort

A large deck, patio or remodeled porch might be the perfect fit for your family. However, if you want something that can be used in all sorts of weather, at all times of the year, then an enclosed porch or sun room is a good option.

Screened porches and sun rooms allow you to enjoy the outdoors while avoiding glaring heat, rain or pesky insects. Knowing how you will use the room, and during which seasons you would like to utilize the space, will help you decide which style best suits your family’s needs. If you want to keep bugs out, have a flow-through of air and don’t plan to extend your outdoor living space through winter, then a screened porch is for you.

A sun room is glass enclosed and is usually built on the side or back of a house. This is so the room can catch the southern or western sun, making it more likely to be used all year. Screens and sliding glass doors may also be installed for those who prefer to be able to open up the room and allow the fresh air to filter inside.

Give Your Porch a Fresh Look

Few of us can think about porch sitting without having sweet memories of our childhood. Perhaps our earliest recollection of porch sitting is at grandma andgrandpa’s house. Those memories of porch sitting are so vivid in our minds that we not only remember the porch but also the sounds, the smells and the company we kept.

Many of us probably had grandparents who had a nice porch off the back of the house. Maybe it overlooked a lawn or garden area. Many precious memories can be made, sitting idly on a porch.

Porches of Today

Fast forward to our day. Now that we are adults with families of our own, we look for ways to incorporate those nostalgic memories into our modern outdoor living spaces, or porches of today. Roeser Home Remodeling loves designing outdoor spaces that bring back those childhood memories of porch sitting and provide the space for your family to make additional memories of your own.

Porch sitting nowadays, has many similarities of porch sitting in times past. Family and friends having sweet tea, lemonade or coffee over conversation while enjoying fresh air and sunshine, an evening of margarita’s, craft beer, or wine tasting, playing cards or board games, or snuggling on the swing, a reading nook, or private area for meditation and contemplation… the list goes on and on.  Not only does porch sitting create memories, but also helps to solidify strong bonds between family and friends.

Modern Porches

Many modern homes have porches designed to provide a beautiful, inviting entrance that says, “welcome” to neighbors and friends. Roeser Home Remodeling can create a porch space designed to have curb appeal and add value to your home while not compromising the welcoming spirit. Sitting areas can be designed and decorated to your taste. Outdoor furniture, while once only consisting of swings, stools or rocking chairs, now includes wicker, treated wood and furniture designed for comfort with padded seats and pillows. Decorating in calming or vibrant colors can add a flare of your personality while giving you an added area to linger and talk.

There is nothing quite like porch sitting. It is not just an activity, it’s a feeling. A feeling of home, part of our culture as Americans. While once considered a status symbol in America, it has now become something most of us long to have. A way to step back, take a moment to breathe and enjoy our life with the people we love.

Roeser Home Remodeling of St. Louis can turn your porch sitting dreams into reality. From idea, to plan, to final solution, your outdoor remodeling project will look amazing when completed and bring back the nostalgia of days gone by.

Give the Gift of a Remodel

Giving the gift of a remodel is a great idea. Sure, it’s nice to give something all wrapped up in paper and bows, but the gift of a remodel is a gift that will be celebrated throughout the coming year.

Kitchens and bathrooms get so much use. The fixtures and function can wear out quickly with the heavy traffic of family and guests. These rooms often show signs of wear much sooner than the rest of the house. So they often need to be updated more frequently. But there are lots of other options when it comes to remodeling your home or expanding your living space.

Who Needs the Gift of a Remodel?

  • A young family with small children might like a redesigned play area or nursery.
  • Create a spa bathroom where a mother of small children can “get away” for a few minutes of solitude.
  • Give dad the man cave he’s always wanted.
  • Finish off a basement for entertaining.
  • Grandparents might like a space for visiting grandchildren.
  • Re-decorate a bedroom for an aging live-in relative.
  • Plan a complete kitchen redesign, the nerve center of every household.
  • Design a room for a specific hobby could be a fun choice.
  • Change the life of a busy parent with a remodeled  laundry area.

Remodels don’t just change the way something looks. Remodels change the way we live. The possibilities are truly endless.

The gift of a remodel is definitely the out-of-the-box choice that is sure to please. It is both generous and highly personal, since it requires the giver to know the habits, needs and lifestyle of the recipient.

A remodel is something you might also considering giving yourself. Maybe it has become increasingly clear that the amenities in your kitchen no longer meet your family’s needs. Maybe your bathroom and closet need more space. Kitchen and bathroom remodels yield the best return on investment for the value of your home. It’s also the best way to enhance the aesthetics of your living space.

Holiday entertaining can be so much more fun, when you you don’t have to fight for oven or counter space. Consider some new amenities, like an extra wall oven or an island for potluck dinners. Imagine your family and friends together in a home that accommodates everyone comfortably. Adding a half bath or a family room can make all the difference when your guest list includes several families.

Bathroom Makeover

Bathrooms are personal. It’s a private space designed especially for our personal care. It’s our personal space, or sanctuary if you will.

Of course, you may have a vision of what you want your bathroom to look like, but maybe it isn’t quite there yet.

The best bathroom designs should be functional but also stylish. There should be balance but also some pizzazz, a little spark that says, ahhh…. now I can relax!

In keeping with practicality, your personality should shine through in all its glory. Your bathroom should be the space to get-away, a retreat where you can relax and be yourself.

That is where Roeser Home Remodeling comes in. We are design and build experts when it comes to bathrooms and remodeling of bathrooms whether your bathroom is brand new or in need of a makeover.

What’s Your Personal Style?

Our design and build concept brings all the elements of bathroom remodeling right to your doorstep. What is your dream bathroom retreat?

Spa Bathrooms

Spa designed bathroom remodels are one of the hot trends for this year. Clean open space with white walls along with natural wood and sleek, minimalistic elements will make you feel like you’ve walked into a spa retreat. Designed to be relaxing and pampering, this bathroom remodel will have all the benefits of a spa in the comfort of your own home.

Contemporary designs are popular for adding luxury along with warmth in your bathroom design. Modern stainless-steel trim along with stainless sinks and metal accents give a sleek design that is very up to date. Mosaic glass tile and eccentric lighting adds warmth and interest to this bathroom style.

Traditional style bathrooms and remodeling elements are always in style. To update a traditional style bathroom, the trend is to open more space, use

elegant and soft tones, including cabinetry and vanity areas. Marble, mirrors, and polished nickel plumbing fixtures all add to the elegance of a traditional bathroom remodel. The idea is to keep a simple design but add elegant accents.

Another hot bathroom trend is to replace the existing tub with a larger, perhaps dual shower enclosure with a seating area. This is an excellent way of opening space and allowing the bathroom area to be more functional.

Recommendations in the home design industry shows that there should at least be one bathtub in the home however, to retain resale value. Freestanding tubs with a nearby seating area is one way to update a look and retain functionality. Roeser Home Remodeling can make recommendations in harmony with all these factors.

Homeowners today that are considering bathroom remodels have myriads of options to consider. Roeser Home Remodeling of St. Louis can take the guesswork out of the bathroom remodel and design your bathroom, turning it from a dream into a reality. Call us today for a free consultation.

Creating a Space for Grandchildren

Home Away from Home

There are fewer joys in life than welcoming a new grandchild into the family. Most grandparents look forward to that time of their life with open arms and eager anticipation. It is a new chapter in life. New beginnings are new adventures. But new grandparents soon realize that new additions to the family may also mean a new addition or remodel to their home.

Today’s grandparents want to create a fun and nurturing environment for their grandchildren, which includes wanting them to feel safe and comfortable when they come to visit, feeling like it’s their “home away from home”.

Where to start

So, what are some home remodeling projects that will make your living space more inviting to grandchildren and the joys that come with grand parenting? Roeser Home Remodeling can make recommendations and offer ideas for a remodel of your home that will accomplish this purpose.

Of course, each family has a unique vision. The first plan of action would be to have a clear idea in mind. Do you see yourself cuddling and reading stories? Maybe you would want to add a library area such as a reading nook or private corner area? Is it your dream to teach your grandchild how to sew or make special gifts for others, thereby nurturing the joy of giving?

Whether you want added space for crafting, reading, or playing games, the ideas are endless. Have you always dreamed of having model trains and a track in open area? Maybe you envision doing other hobbies with your grandchild, such as painting or sculpting? Whatever your vision is, in St. Louis, Roeser Home Remodeling can help you make it a reality.

Basement Remodels

Added space for entertaining grandchildren can sometimes be obtained by a basement remodel project. Adding texture and color to an existing space can make it more fun and appealing to the young eye, while preserving the aesthetic. You may want to add additional storage areas to your basement remodel along with built-in bookshelves and a media area for television and movie snuggles. Additional storage can be used for storing toys, games and books, along with supplies for craft and hobby projects.

Another remodel project that is popular is the conversion of a living space into a game room. Arcade type games such as Pac Man and Foosball, ping pong or table pool will make hours of fun for you and the grandkids. Of course, it isn’t always fun and games. You may want to remodel an area to give more space for cooking family dinners and quiet conversation. Roeser Home Remodeling can make suggestions and show you how to accomplish this in your home remodeling project, as well.

Multi-generational Designs

In today’s age many home remodeling projects are being designed as more multi-generational. Especially if you foresee a need for hosting family for an extended stay. Adding space with the expectation of accommodating family, whether grandchildren, aging parents, or in-laws just makes sense. In addition to home remodeling existing areas, Roeser Home Remodeling can show you how to add space to your home for these additional needs. Call us today for a no cost evaluation of your home remodeling projects, and let us show you how you can create a “home away from home” for your grandchildren.

Roeser Contributing Sponsor for “Competition in a Box”

(Pictured from left to right) Eva Fryer-Payne, Family Homes; Trisha McConkey, Associated Bank; Cindy Roeser, Roeser Home Remodeling; Christy Nalley, Metro Electric Lighting; Jan Hibbs, Hibbs Home; Thiessa Schmittgens, Pella Windows and Doors; (Not pictured but on the Sub Committee) Kathleen Crowley, Spire; Sally Hentz, Benton Home Builders.

On Thursday, April 26, 2018, the Home Builders Association (HBA) of St. Louis hosted a student chapter “Competition in a Box” for some local area participating schools. There were three schools and six teams of three students involved in the event this year. The goal is to encourage more schools and students to participate in the coming years.

This event is a one-day competition designed to provide tech students, already semi-skilled, an opportunity to develop and showcase many needed skills in the home building industry. The “Competition in a Box”  was designed in multiple choice format with participating students answering questions about blueprints and construction methods. They were not easy questions and it really helped the students to see the home building industry can be both challenging and rewarding.

In addressing the nationwide labor shortage, it is important for young students to realize there are many rewarding careers in the Home Building Industry. Events such as “Competition in a Box” are designed to help make the students aware of all the different careers and opportunities available to them after graduation, along with providing many with needed connections to local businesses and HBA members.

There were many contributors at this year’s event. Cindy Roeser of Roeser Home Remodeling in St. Louis contributed by helping grade student papers along with Trisha McConkey of Associated Bank. Roeser Home Remodeling also helped sponsor the event by providing nine $20 gift certificates to QT that were put in student bags. Atlas 46, DeWalt Tools, Home Depot, and St. Louis-Kansas City Carpenters Regional Council sponsored prizes for the winners of the competition. Other sponsors included ABF Security, Spire, and Associated Bank. Members of the HBA’s Professional Women in Building Council also donated gift cards and other items for participating students.

The HBA is a local trade association of more than 600 companies representing the residential construction industry. The goal for the local St. Louis student chapter is to connect members with students to provide job shadowing, internships and opportunities after graduation.

Hunkering Down for Winter?

Four Home Remodel Projects that are Perfect for Colder Months!

When colder weather arrives to town, there are several things that readily come to mind. For many, it’s a time for families to gather. Winter coats, mittens, scarves, hot cocoa, and the holidays are a few topics that might be on your mind. Cold, snow and ice tend to make us want to stay home and cozy up by the fireplace, hunkering down for winter. The thought of home improvement projects may make you shiver.

Of course, when it comes to remodeling your home in colder temperatures, you may not want to tear out those outside walls for a home addition or install new windows. You don’t want to sit around your home wearing coats and mittens, letting Jack Frost nip at your nose! So, what home remodeling projects are better suited for the winter months?  Listed below are four home remodeling projects that are perfect for accomplishing in the colder winter months.

Hardwood Flooring

Winter months with colder temperatures are a good time to consider going ahead and installing those beautiful wood floors you have been dreaming of. Especially in the St. Louis metro area, winter brings lower humidity thereby making it an ideal time to enhance your home with hardwood floors. Lower humidity levels will help prevent any gapping of the wood between newly laid boards, and any adhesive used will have a quicker drying time. Hardwood floors add value to your home while giving it a fresh, clean, and cozy feel for the colder temperatures.

Adding insulation to your home may seem like a no brainer. Yet, depending on the age of your home and the building codes at the time, many homeowners are not adequately covered when it comes to insulation. You can have the experts at Roeser Home Remodeling do a complete evaluation of what is needed to improve your home’s insulation and bring it up to industry standards. No one wants to throw money away, and if your home is not insulated to its full capacity, then that is exactly what you are doing. Literally, money is going right through the roof. This home remodeling project will improve the value of your home and save you money in heating and cooling.

Bathroom Renovation

Colder winter months are a great time for a bathroom remodel project. You want your bathroom, whether it is your main bath, master bath or spare bathroom to share the same overall design of your home. Roeser Home Remodeling can help you achieve the value and aesthetic you are looking for. Winter months are the perfect opportunity to take care of your bathroom remodel. This remodel can be achieved with minimal upset to your family and dwelling.

Basement Remodel

Basement remodeling is one home remodeling project that is ideal for colder winter months. The basement is usually somewhat cut off from the main living space of your home. Remodeling of this area can be accomplished with minimal impact to your family and your everyday busy schedules. It is the one area of your home that will enhance and add to the quality of your living space. Do you need more bedrooms? Additional bathrooms? A family recreational area? The list could go on and on. Your basement remodel could hold the key to the extra areas you need for your family and the colder months are the perfect time to make it happen.

As you can see, the winter months are no time for hibernation or bunkering down when it comes to home remodeling. Roeser Home Remodeling will be happy to meet with you and discuss your home remodeling desires and how we can help turn your dreams into reality, even in the colder months!

Winter is the Perfect Time for these Four Home Remodeling Projects

Just because winter is here doesn’t mean you need to halt your home improvement projects. These projects are perfect for this time of year.

There is no doubt that summer time is the most popular for most remodeling projects. Thanks to this, contractors tend to have a lot of downtime during the winter. This means they have greater availability and lower rates, which saves any homeowner valuable time and money.

We shouldn’t embark on any old project in the winter though. Some improvements are better suited for the cool months than others are. Here are four ways you can tackle common home issues this summer.
