Roeser Home Remodeling believes firmly in supporting our community and the youth who live here. Whenever possible, we join with organizations that have the same goals. The St. Joseph Housing Initiative (SJHI) is one of those organizations.
SJHI is focused on creating affordable housing for low and moderate-income families through various means—including rehabbing neglected properties and helping those who need housing get into them. In order to keep costs low, volunteers do most of the work.
From March 25th to the 28th, Roeser team members, Mark Talley and Michael Carey, worked with SJHI and the Youth Volunteer Corps of St. Louis (YVC St. Louis) to build a fence that would create a safe space for the children of a future homeowner. But this was about more than just building a fence—it was also to provide the youth from YVC with a useful life skill by teaching them basic carpentry.
We enjoyed getting to know the youth as we all worked together as a team. By the end of three days, we had a sturdy fence and a fine group of young people with new carpentry skills. We hope they will continue to use their skills to benefit themselves and their community.
