Are you considering adding a sunroom to your home? A sunroom may not only increase its value, but it will add space and beauty to it.

Imagine yourself enjoying your morning tea as you watch the birds in the garden through your sunroom windows. Or picture yourself snuggled under a warm blanket as you watch the snow fall outside. If those images appeal to you, then a sunroom might be for you. But first, how is a sunroom different than a home addition or a four-season room?

What makes it a sunroom?

Adding a sunroom is not the same as building an addition to your home. A home addition is an extension whose exterior blends into the rest of the house’s elevation and exterior. This may be a full room or just a bump-out. If you need a home addition, Roeser Home Remodeling can build that for you too.

A sunroom also extends out from your home. What makes it different is that it has an outdoor access and is glass enclosed, allowing for lots of natural light. Another name for a sunroom is a three-season room. Unless you insulate the room and add ability to heat and cool it, you won’t be able to use it in winter. And if you do insulate it and add HVAC, then you can call it a four-season room.

What to consider before building

If you’ve decided to add a sunroom to your home, here are a few things Roeser’s design-build team suggests you consider before you build.

  • First and foremost, how do you want to use the space? Do you want it to be a place for the kids to play on a rainy or too-hot day? Will it be your private retreat where you can roll out your yoga mat and meditate? Do you want to host family gatherings?
  • How big do you want it to be? Will it be more of a bump-out or will it take up the whole side of the home? A sunroom doesn’t have to be large to be enjoyable.
  • Do you have a foundation already in place you can use? Using a small patio you already have as your sunroom’s foundation could save you money.
  • What will be your view? If you’re going to add a sunroom, you don’t want to be looking at your neighbor’s privacy fence or at your garage wall. So be sure to plan to build it where you’ll have a pleasant view.
  • Consider St. Louis weather and the direction the windows would be facing. Of course you want to bring in plenty of natural light, but when you add a three-season room you need to balance the heat and light the windows will bring in, with comfort. Too much sun on a hot afternoon without sufficient shade or cooling won’t make for a pleasant space.

How to decorate your sunroom

The best sunrooms have a balance of indoor and outdoor elements. Here are some ideas to use in yours.

  • Opt for wood or tile flooring. These types of floors are easy to clean and lend simplicity to the room. Add a throw rug for contrast in color and texture.
  • Add lots of plants. Plants will bring the outdoors to you while protecting you from the elements. It also adds an element of the natural world and studies show that being in the natural world can be calming and reduce stress.
  • Decide on a color scheme or theme. Will your sunroom be white with pops of color? Perhaps a nautical theme, including a hammock in the corner is your thing.
