We are pleased and excited to report that Roeser Home Remodeling was named as an award winner in two categories in the 2022 Remodeling Project of the Year by the Home Builders Association of St. Louis. These awards recognize and honor excellence in the home building industry. We are extremely proud of the work we’ve done and are thrilled to have it recognized. Roeser Home Remodeling’s work placed in two categories:

Aging in Place Remodeling Project of the Year

Our goal in designing this aging in place bathroom was to provide the owners with a space they can use well into old age while avoiding the appearance often associated with this kind of room.

Because of its nature, the bathroom can be a hazardous for anyone of any age, but especially for older homeowners. First, we expand the usable space to allow for ease of access in general, should the homeowner need room to maneuver a walker or wheelchair. This also minimizes the need to turn around.

An often-overlooked feature when designing an aging in space bathroom, is lighting. Good lighting is important in any room under any circumstance. It should not be glaring or over-bright. But it should be bright enough that aging eyes don’t have trouble seeing what they’re doing, whether it’s filling the bathtub, looking in the mirror, or opening a medicine cabinet. As we did here, when we take on an aging in place bathroom remodel, we often add LED cans to the tub and shower areas, and added brighter lighting.

The sink area and the medicine cabinet are central to self-care. Being able to easily locate medication in the medicine cabinet, wash one’s hands, and take care of one’s face are vital to any aging in place bathroom. Vanity lights above the mirrors also reflect light for bathroom uses. And we included framed mirror medicine cabinets with mirrored interiors to direct light so that homeowners can easily see what they are reaching for.

Aging joints weaken with time, so comfortable use of faucets that are easy to adjust and turn off and on are important. We kept this in mind when we added levered plumbing fixtures which are functional for all hand strengths.

A big part of creating an aging in place bathroom is making sure that the homeowner can bathe safely and easily. Getting safely in and out of the bathtub and/or shower is extremely important for all age groups, but especially older people. We created safe places for the owners to access the bathtub and by enlarging the shower stall enough to allow for a shower chair. We also provided an inset niche to the shower for sitting down if the owner prefers that to a shower chair.

Because the ability to sit and rise comfortably is vital, Roeser placed grab bars around the tub, in and near the shower, and alongside the toilet so the user will be able to use all of them with confidence. This is a feature of any aging in place bathroom design, but it doesn’t have to be unattractive. We choose our grab bars carefully so that they blend in with the décor.

We combined these and other safety measures with hexagon porcelain tiles with a matte finish to prevent slips and falls. And finally, we added vanity drawers for storage that allow everything to be fully visible, front to back, without strain.

The McGuires were thrilled with the changes, and had this to say about our work:

Choosing Roeser Home Remodeling was an excellent choice for our master bath. Brandi is a talented designer and helped me with the selection process. They communicated daily what was happening and when—much appreciated. All the tradesmen were meticulous and precise. It was a pleasure working with the Roeser family and I highly recommend. I would give ten stars if I could.

We’ll be writing more about helping homeowners age in place in a future blog.

Kitchen of the Year

This growing young family of five knew this area of their home was not working for them, but they weren’t sure they could accomplish what they hoped. Though their home has many features that they enjoy, the kitchen was too small and too dark.

After visiting with them at length and studying all the changes we’d need to make, including replacing load-bearing walls in order to enlarge their space, Roeser came to them with a plan that they liked.

To help with the feeling of being closed off and dark, we opened up the kitchen by removing walls so the homeowner and family can see into the other parts of the home and no one feels isolated from the rest of the family’s activities. This also makes it great for entertaining.

Along the way, we installed a custom-made banquette under a set of corner windows and then added a set of deep drawers beneath the countertop. This has become the homeowner’s favorite part of the kitchen. Having drawers underneath for “Costco finds” along with containing two very young boys during a meal, with some play room, has made meal time much more enjoyable.

Roeser also added a large island which is perfect for holidays and milestone celebrations. This allowed for extra room for cooking or laying out banquet style food.

Light colors, textured tile, and quartz countertops blend well to make this kitchen a happy place. A darker Island grounds the space and adds interest. It houses the microwave along with easy access drawers for storage. Gold open lantern lighting gives the room sparkle without closing it in.

The Yancy family loves all the changes and wrote us a review saying:

Throughout construction, we were kept up to date on schedules, potential supply chain issues, and any decisions that needed to be made. The process could truly not have gone smoother! They even helped us craft a very functional temporary kitchen for our two toddlers.

As the work wrapped up, we were thrilled with our new space. It feels like us and was perfectly built for our family! We added a new baby while we were building this new kitchen and love spending time as a family of 5 around our island. The high-quality craftsmanship from Roeser will last us a lifetime.
